Beinn Lora

Beinn Lora is situated 7 miles north of Oban overlooking the village of Benderloch and Tralee beach. It is a comfortable half day or evening walk as the round trip can be done within 2 hours even allowing for stops at the viewpoints. That really is the whole point of Ben Lora as it’s position allows great views over Tralee Bay and looking south towards Dunstaffnage Castle across the Firth of Lorn and over to Mull.

The walk starts at a small carpark in the middle of Benderloch and after passing through the gate climbs steeply up a well trodden path to the right. The path gains height quickly and almost straight away offers glimpses of the view through the trees. The path passes through a small copse of mature beech trees and continues upwards.

After 30 minutes or so of walking the path splits with a signposted path going off on the left to Eagle’s Eyrie viewpoint. This is a dead end path but is well worth the extra effort as it allows a West facing view over Tralee bay with the Island of Lismore behind. Away in the distance is the large granite quarry of Glensanda.

Once back on the main path a short walk leads to the deer fence at the boundary of the forest. There is a picnic table here and a chance to get the view south towards Oban, east towards Ben Cruachan and north towards Glencoe. The summit is beyond over a short but often quite boggy path and is worth the extra effort for those happy with bog-trotting.

Returning to the car park is simply a matter of retracing your steps.
